Who is at risk for gum disease?
People tend to pay more attention to their teeth than their gums. But bright, sparkling teeth are not the only sign of a healthy mouth. Actually, an astounding number of people are affected by gum disease – about half of the adults in the U.S.
Gums are a barrier that helps prevent things that may consequently damage your body. Similar to skin protecting muscles, bones, and organs, gums protect teeth as well as the structures holding them in place. Also known as periodontal disease, gum disease happens from plaque invading spaces between the gums and teeth.
Gum disease can become difficult, painful, and expensive and has also been linked to health problems like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and premature births or low-birth weight babies.
But, many of the risk factors of gum disease are controllable through the right oral care habits. However, some people are more at risk for gum disease than others.
Poor Oral Care Habits
Neglecting to take care for your mouth puts you at the highest risk. Not brushing and flossing every day allows plaque to build up and become tartar. Regular cleanings by your dentist are also valuable in preventing gum disease. When you skip visits to the dentist you have a greater opportunity of building up plaque and increasing your risk of developing gum disease.
Smoking
Every type of tobacco is detrimental to your gums. Tobacco remains one of the top risk factors for gum disease, along with being one of the most preventable. Tobacco increases your risk of developing oral cancer (among other types of cancer) and reduces blood supply to the gum tissue which can mask symptoms of gum disease.
Older Adults
One of the uncontrollable risk factors for gum disease is aging because plaque has had time to build up. Daily brushing and flossing along with regular visits to your dentist can lower your risk of gum disease.
